blàthach
buttermilk, Irish, Middle Irish bláthach; bla$$--tac-, root mel, mlâ, as in blàth. The idea is "pounded, soured". Cf. braich, from mrac-, "soured", and English malt, "soured", from melt. Hence Scottish bladach.
